Montana crypto taxes

How Montana taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Montana entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Montana, including Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman, Helena, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Montana taxes crypto as income across two brackets for tax year 2026: 4.7% up to $47,500 and 5.65% above it for single filers. The top rate dropped from 5.9% to 5.65% in 2026 and is scheduled to fall again to 5.4% in 2027. Residents report on Form 2, which was heavily revised after the state's tax simplification law.

Montana has a feature most states do not: a preferential rate on net long-term capital gains. Crypto held more than one year is taxed at just 3.0% up to $47,500 and 4.1% above, instead of ordinary rates. Crypto held a year or less gets no break and is taxed at the full 4.7%-5.65%. That split makes holding period and accurate cost basis worth real money, and it is exactly the kind of separation a crypto tax accountant gets right.

The Montana Department of Revenue receives your federal data and starts from your federal taxable income, so a clean federal return is the foundation. Montana has no local income taxes, which keeps the calculation simpler than in states with county or city add-ons. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service delivers full reconciliation and IRS-ready federal forms; your Montana Form 2 builds on those numbers.

Worth knowing

Montana-specific considerations

Long-term crypto gets a break

Montana taxes net long-term capital gains at 3.0% and 4.1%, well below its 4.7%-5.65% ordinary rates. Crypto held more than a year qualifies; crypto held a year or less does not. Tracking holding periods precisely is where the savings live.

Not a community-property state

Montana is a common-law property state, so crypto is generally owned by whoever's account or wallet holds it. That simplifies separate filings and divorce splits compared with community-property states.

Rates are falling

Montana cut its top rate from 5.9% to 5.65% in 2026, with a further drop to 5.4% scheduled for 2027. Timing large crypto sales around the rate schedule can matter.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Montana

Does Montana tax crypto gains?
Yes. Crypto is treated as property, so gains are taxable in Montana. Short-term gains (held a year or less) are taxed at ordinary rates of 4.7%-5.65% for 2026. Long-term gains on crypto held over a year qualify for Montana's reduced capital gains rates of 3.0% and 4.1%.
Do long-term crypto holdings really get a lower Montana rate?
Yes. Under Mont. Code Ann. 15-30-2103, net long-term capital gains, including crypto held more than one year, are taxed at 3.0% up to $47,500 and 4.1% above (single, 2026), instead of the ordinary 4.7%-5.65%. Holding period and accurate cost basis decide whether a sale qualifies, so the reconciliation has to be exact.
Do I need to file a Montana return for crypto?
Yes, if you meet Montana's filing thresholds. Your federal gains and income flow onto Form 2, where long-term and short-term crypto are separated to apply the correct rate. A crypto accountant makes sure that split is right before it hits the state return.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Montana?
Either works if they genuinely specialize in crypto. What matters is clean reconciliation and correct federal forms, not the title on the door. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis every day, then delivers CPA-ready forms your Montana Form 2 builds on.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Montana?
Crypto CPAs are scarcer in Montana than in coastal metros, and specialists often bill $250-$400/hr. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500, whatever your zip code, with a dedicated crypto tax professional handling the full reconciliation and IRS-ready forms.
