Colorado crypto taxes

How Colorado taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Colorado entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Colorado, including Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, Fort Collins, Lakewood, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Colorado keeps it simple on rate, not on reporting. Every dollar of crypto gain is taxed at a flat 4.4% for tax year 2026, the same rate whether you held for a day or a decade. Colorado starts from your federal taxable income, so whatever hits your 8949 and Schedule D flows straight onto Form DR 0104.

That federal linkage is the catch. The Colorado Department of Revenue sees your federal numbers, so sloppy cost basis or missed exchange transfers follow you to the state return. Colorado's old capital gains subtraction was narrowed years ago and does not shelter typical crypto, so there is no state discount to lean on.

A crypto tax accountant who reconciles the wallets first is what protects you here. Get the federal 8949 right and the flat 4.4% state math falls out cleanly. Get it wrong and you are amending two returns.

Worth knowing

Colorado-specific considerations

Flat rate, federal-linked base

Colorado's flat 4.4% is easy to compute but rides entirely on your federal taxable income. The state return is only as accurate as the 8949 it builds on, which is why reconciliation comes first.

No capital gains break

Colorado's capital gains subtraction was pared back and does not cover most crypto. Long-term holdings get no state preference, so a big realization is taxed at the full 4.4%.

TABOR rate swings

Under the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, Colorado sometimes trims the income tax rate when revenue runs over the cap. The statutory rate is 4.4%, but a surplus year can nudge the effective rate down, so confirm the final figure before you file.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Colorado

Does Colorado tax crypto gains?
Yes. Colorado taxes crypto gains as ordinary income at a flat 4.4% for tax year 2026. There is no long-term discount, and the state base starts from your federal taxable income.
Do I need to file a Colorado return for crypto?
Yes, if you meet Colorado's filing thresholds. Your federal gains and income carry onto Form DR 0104, so accurate federal reconciliation drives the whole state number.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Colorado?
Either works if they actually specialize in crypto. Whether you call them a crypto accountant or a crypto CPA, what matters is clean reconciliation and correct federal forms, since Colorado just applies 4.4% to that base. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis daily, then delivers CPA-ready forms.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Colorado?
Denver and Boulder crypto CPAs often bill $300 to $500/hr, and a messy DeFi year adds up fast. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500, whatever your zip code.
Does Colorado give a break for long-term crypto holdings?
No. Colorado's capital gains subtraction was narrowed years ago and does not cover typical crypto. Long-term and short-term gains are both taxed at the flat 4.4%.
