Maryland crypto taxes

How Maryland taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Maryland entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Maryland, including Baltimore, Columbia, Germantown, Silver Spring, Frederick, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Maryland taxes crypto gains as ordinary income across ten brackets, from 2% up to 6.5% for tax year 2026. In 2025 the state added two new high-income brackets, 6.25% over $500,000 and 6.5% over $1 million for single filers, so top earners pay more than they did a year ago.

The number most people miss is the county income tax. Every Maryland county and Baltimore City stacks its own rate, roughly 2.25% to 3.3%, on the same taxable income, capital gains included. That means your real rate on a crypto sale is the state bracket plus your local rate, not the headline 6.5%.

On top of that, Maryland runs a 2% surtax on net capital gains once federal AGI clears $350,000. The Comptroller of Maryland receives your federal return data and reconciles it against what you file, so mismatched cost basis on exchange and DeFi activity is exactly what draws a notice.

Maryland adds a 2% surtax on net capital gains for taxpayers with federal adjusted gross income above $350,000. It stacks on the state and county rates, pushing the top effective rate on crypto gains toward 11.8%. Carve-outs exist for a primary home sold under $1.5M and for retirement accounts, but not for typical trading gains.

Maryland counties and Baltimore City levy their own income tax on top of the state rate, roughly 2.25% to 3.3% for 2026. It applies to all income including capital gains, so your true crypto rate is the state bracket plus your county rate. A top-bracket resident in a high-rate county can pay close to 9.8% before the investment surtax.

Worth knowing

Maryland-specific considerations

The county tax multiplier

Your crypto rate is the state bracket plus a county tax of up to 3.3%. Montgomery, Howard, and Baltimore City residents feel this most, and it applies to every dollar of gain.

2% capital gains surtax

Over $350,000 federal AGI, Maryland adds a 2% surtax on net capital gains. A crypto CPA models whether a large sale trips the threshold before you execute it.

New 6.5% top bracket

Maryland added 6.25% and 6.5% brackets in 2025. High-volume traders now sit in territory that did not exist two years ago.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Maryland

Does Maryland tax crypto gains?
Yes. Maryland taxes crypto gains as ordinary income at 2%-6.5% (tax year 2026), plus a county income tax of roughly 2.25%-3.3%, plus a 2% surtax on net capital gains once federal AGI tops $350,000.
What is the county income tax on crypto in Maryland?
Every county and Baltimore City adds its own income tax, about 2.25% to 3.3% for 2026, on the same income the state taxes. It hits capital gains too, so budget for state plus county on any crypto sale.
Do I need to file a Maryland return for crypto?
Yes, if you meet Maryland's filing thresholds. Gains flow from your federal 8949 and Schedule D onto Form 502, which also calculates your county tax.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Maryland?
A crypto accountant or CPA works either way if they specialize in digital assets. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis every day, then delivers CPA-ready federal forms your Form 502 builds on.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Maryland?
Baltimore and DC-suburb crypto CPAs often bill $300-$500/hr. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500: full reconciliation and IRS-ready federal forms, whatever your county rate.
How does the 2% Maryland capital gains surtax work?
If your federal adjusted gross income exceeds $350,000, Maryland adds a 2% surtax on net capital gains. It stacks on the state and county rates, pushing top effective crypto rates near 11.8%. A crypto tax professional can time sales around the threshold.
