Washington, D.C. crypto taxes

How Washington, D.C. taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Washington, D.C. entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Washington, D.C., including Washington, Georgetown, Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights, Navy Yard, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Washington, D.C. runs its own graduated income tax with seven brackets, from 4% up to 10.75% for tax year 2026. Crypto gains are ordinary income here. There is no long-term discount, so a coin held five years and a coin flipped in a day are taxed the same.

The 10.75% top rate applies to taxable income over $1 million, one of the highest marginal rates in the country. The DC Office of Tax and Revenue administers the D-40 and starts your calculation from federal adjusted gross income, so the numbers on your federal 8949 and Schedule D flow straight through.

Residency is the trigger. If you live in the District, you file a D-40 and DC taxes your worldwide crypto gains. Maryland and Virginia residents who work in DC do not file a D-40 on wage income thanks to reciprocity, but that agreement covers wages, not investment gains, so where you actually reside is what matters for crypto.

Worth knowing

Washington, D.C.-specific considerations

One of the highest top rates

DC's 10.75% top bracket on income over $1 million rivals the highest state rates. Large crypto realizations can push you into it fast.

Residency, not workplace

DC-Maryland-Virginia reciprocity covers wages only. Crypto gains follow your residency, so commuters are taxed by their home jurisdiction.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Washington, D.C.

Does Washington, D.C. tax crypto gains?
Yes. DC taxes crypto gains as ordinary income at 4%-10.75% (tax year 2026), with no long-term discount.
Do I need to file a DC return for crypto?
Yes, if you are a DC resident who meets the filing threshold. Gains flow from your federal return onto Form D-40, which starts from federal AGI.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Washington, D.C.?
DC-area crypto CPAs bill at metro rates, often $400 to $600 an hour. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500, whatever your ward or zip code.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Washington, D.C.?
Either a crypto CPA or another crypto accountant works if they specialize in digital assets. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis every day, then delivers CPA-ready federal forms your D-40 builds on.
Does DC give a break for long-term crypto holdings?
No. The District taxes short-term and long-term crypto gains the same, as ordinary income on Form D-40. Holding period changes your federal rate, not your DC rate.
I work in DC but live in Maryland or Virginia. Where do my crypto gains get taxed?
In your home state. DC reciprocity covers wages, not investment income, so your crypto gains are taxed where you reside, not where you work.
