Missouri crypto taxes

How Missouri taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Missouri entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield, Columbia, Independence, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Missouri is the first state in the country to fully exempt capital gains for individuals. Under HB 594, starting tax year 2025 you subtract 100% of your federally reported capital gains on Form MO-A. Crypto you held and sold at a gain owes no Missouri income tax, at any bracket, with no cap or income limit.

Ordinary income is a different story. Missouri's graduated brackets run from 0% to 4.7% for 2026. Crypto that lands as ordinary income, staking rewards, mining, airdrops, and pay received in crypto, is taxed at those rates. So your Missouri bill turns on how each transaction is characterized on your federal return.

The Department of Revenue works off your federal numbers. The subtraction only reaches gains reported for federal purposes, and capital losses do not qualify. Getting Form 8949 and Schedule D right is what determines whether a transaction is an exempt gain or taxable ordinary income.

Worth knowing

Missouri-specific considerations

Capital gains are exempt

Missouri lets individuals subtract 100% of federally reported capital gains on Form MO-A. Crypto held and sold at a gain owes zero Missouri income tax, with no cap.

Ordinary crypto income still taxed

The exemption covers gains only. Staking, mining, airdrops, and crypto pay are ordinary income taxed at up to 4.7%, so how a transaction is classified drives your bill.

First mover

Missouri is the first state to fully exempt individual capital gains. The change is new as of tax year 2025, so prior guidance and older CPAs may not have it right yet.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Missouri

Does Missouri tax crypto gains?
Not capital gains. Starting tax year 2025, individuals subtract 100% of federally reported capital gains on Form MO-A, so crypto you held and sold at a gain owes no Missouri income tax. Ordinary crypto income like staking and mining is still taxed at up to 4.7%.
Do I still file a Missouri return if my crypto gains are exempt?
Yes, if you meet Missouri's filing thresholds. You report the gains federally, then claim the 100% subtraction on Form MO-A with Form MO-1040. The exemption is a subtraction on the return, not a reason to skip filing.
Is staking or mining income exempt in Missouri too?
No. The exemption covers capital gains only. Staking rewards, mining, airdrops, and crypto received as pay are ordinary income taxed at Missouri's graduated rates, up to 4.7% for 2026.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Missouri?
Either works if they specialize in crypto. The label matters less than whether the crypto accountant handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis every day. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who does exactly that, then delivers CPA-ready forms your Missouri return builds on.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Missouri?
Crypto CPAs in Kansas City and St. Louis often bill $300-$500/hr. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500, whatever your zip code.
