Oregon crypto taxes

How Oregon taxes your crypto gains

CoinLedger serves Oregon entirely remotely, one dedicated crypto tax expert from the first import to filed forms.

We work with crypto investors across Oregon, including Portland, Salem, Eugene, Gresham, Bend, entirely online, so a crypto tax accountant near you is one form away.

Oregon taxes crypto gains as ordinary income across four brackets, from 4.75% up to 9.9% for tax year 2026. The top rate hits single-filer income over $125,000, and there is no long-term discount. A gain taxed at the 20% federal rate can owe another 9.9% to Salem.

Oregon has no sales tax, but the income tax is among the highest in the country, and the Department of Revenue receives your federal data directly. Cost basis that does not tie out to your federal 8949 is what triggers notices here.

Portland changes the math. Multnomah County residents also pay the Preschool for All tax and the Metro Supportive Housing Services tax, both of which reach crypto gains once income clears their thresholds. High earners in Portland can face a combined state-and-local marginal rate well into the teens, so where you live inside Oregon matters.

Oregon income tax brackets, tax year 2026 (single filer)
Taxable income overRate
$04.75%
$4,5506.75%
$11,4008.75%
$125,0009.9%

Portland-area residents owe local income taxes on top of the state rate. The Metro Supportive Housing Services tax is 1% on taxable income above roughly $128,000 for single filers (the threshold is now inflation-adjusted). Multnomah County's Preschool for All tax adds 1.5% on income over $125,000, plus another 1.5% over $250,000 for single filers, up to 3%. Both apply to crypto gains, which flow through as ordinary income.

Worth knowing

Oregon-specific considerations

Portland stacks three taxes

Portland-area crypto investors can pay Oregon income tax plus the Metro Supportive Housing Services tax and the Multnomah County Preschool for All tax on the same gain. The combined marginal rate on large gains climbs into the teens.

No community property

Oregon is not a community-property state, so crypto is titled to the spouse who holds it. That changes how gains and basis are allocated on separate returns and in divorce, unlike neighboring Washington, California, Idaho, and Nevada.

No sales tax, high income tax

Oregon has no sales tax, which draws crypto holders, but the 9.9% top income rate reaches gains that many states would tax lightly or not at all. The tradeoff surprises people relocating from no-income-tax states.

Don't take our word for it

Investors who thought it was hopeless

These are real people who handed our crypto CPAs a mess and got back a finished return.

Done For You Made My Crypto Taxes Easy.

Starting the process was easy and my assigned representative was highly knowledgeable and completed my case quickly so I was able to get the information to my tax preparer well before the tax filing deadline. Based on new IRS guidance I would never have been able to prepare the crypto portion of my return without the work done by Coinledger. This was a great experience.

Highly recommend the Done-For-You program

I was very pleased with the Done For You program offered by CoinLedger. The onboarding process was quick and thorough. My contact person did a great job steering me through how to get the information needed despite my lack of technical knowledge. He was able to collect and reconcile five years of data, including Celsius bankruptcy losses, and give me US-compliant tax forms for multiple accounts.

Impressive follow-through on a genuinely complex case

I hired CoinLedger's Done For You service to reconcile several years of crypto activity across multiple exchanges and wallets, a case complicated by staking income and a high volume of transactions. When the initial report showed higher gains than I expected, they dug back in, found a handful of transactions misclassified by a software bug, corrected it, and my total capital gains came down by roughly a third. Upfront, accurate, and willing to get it right.

Professional and friendly service

Jamie did an excellent job putting my crypto data in order. I had years of disorganized data from exchange closures and transfers across wallets. Jamie was able to find the missing cost basis for my crypto and prepared accurate IRS forms for filing. I would recommend this service to anyone who needs a once-and-for-all clean up of their crypto tax data.

Crypto tax questions in Oregon

Does Oregon tax crypto gains?
Yes, as ordinary income at 4.75%-9.9% for tax year 2026. There is no long-term discount. Portland-area residents can owe more through the Metro SHS and Multnomah County Preschool for All taxes on the same gains.
Do I need to file an Oregon return for crypto?
Yes, if you meet Oregon's filing thresholds. Full-year residents report gains and income on Form OR-40, building on the figures from your federal return. Portland and Multnomah County taxes are filed separately.
How are Portland's local taxes applied to crypto?
Crypto gains flow into your taxable income, so they count toward the Metro Supportive Housing Services tax (1% over about $128,000 single) and the Multnomah County Preschool for All tax (1.5% over $125,000, plus 1.5% over $250,000). A single Portland gain can be taxed by the state and two local jurisdictions.
Should I hire a crypto CPA or a crypto tax professional in Oregon?
A crypto CPA, a crypto accountant, or a crypto tax professional all work if they specialize in digital assets. What matters is clean reconciliation and correct federal forms that your Oregon and Portland returns build on. CoinLedger pairs you with a dedicated crypto tax professional who handles DeFi, staking, and cross-exchange cost basis daily, then delivers CPA-ready forms.
How much does a crypto CPA cost in Oregon?
Portland crypto CPAs commonly bill hourly, and complex DeFi or multi-wallet work runs up fast. CoinLedger's Done-For-You service is one flat quote from $3,500, whether you are in Portland, Bend, or a small coastal town.
